Foraging for stuff can give you a chipped stone. The stone axe has about 1/10 of the durability then the regular axe. Look in hardware stores if you want axes. Or take the lucky perk and kill a hundred zombies. It really sucks when you can't find an axe because the stone axes break after felling just 2 trees.Craft spears to catch fish. Craft axes to chop wood for fire. Craft a hammer. A note here that it is quite necessary to take the "Wakeful" trait as well. You will need to sleep as little as possible because you will need as much uptime as possible to forage, chop wood, fish and such during the first 10 days or so.
