Did something happen to possibly cause this issue, referring to you riding conditions and use of the Ranger. Give us a little more information.Fuel pump is the most common problem based on the symptom described. It only needs a small amount of fuel to start, but as more fuel is called for, fuel pressure will drop and the engine starves for fuel - backfire through the intake is a classic indication of a lean condition. There is no water in the fuel, the fuel pump is runs when key is turned, the fuel injector is spraying fuel when starter is engaged, and there is spark. It takes quite a bit of cranking and throttle to get it to start, then it needs throttle to keep it running until it warms up for a minute. Spray starting fluid into the intake while cranking the engine - if it starts on starting fluid, you eliminate the engine and ignition system as potential problems - check the fuel pressure or replace the fuel pump or both.
