Kansas prairie fires
During the fall of 1852 a high drama unfolded on the Santa Fe Trail when a troop of U.S. Cavalry went into camp near Diamond Springs, in what is now Kansas. In the waning hours before sundown a party of Indians set fires on all sides of their camp. The full account was described by Colonel Percival G. Lowe.Since the inaugural Prairie Fire race in 2010, the Wichita Sports Commission has contributed over $160,000 to other local charities and organizations. Over the course of a decade, more than 55,000 runners have participated in our races. Many have traveled to Wichita from all 50 states and 15 foreign countries.
