Leaving the spawn area smaller than 16x16 could decrease efficiency though, as the game will select a random location within the 16x16x6 area and test if it can spawn an iron golem there. So the less valid spawn locations you have, the more likely that test will fail. That probably wouldn't have a huge impact on efficiency though, not sure..
