What is Thermal Zoning? The online, open-access ASHRAE Terminology web page4 states that a zone is "(1) a separately controlled heated or cooled space. (2) one occupied space or several occu- pied spaces with similar occupancy category, occupant density, zone air distribution effectiveness, and zone primary airflow per unit area.11.7.1. Example: The Basic Thermal Zone ¶. The following ASL describes a basic configuration where the entire system is treated as a single thermal zone.
